"That's Hans, man.  He's a proper Christian.
You know, proper old-time Christian.
Not like these Fox News fucks."

"Well, as Gandhi said..."
~(Hans)~

"Oh, you two.  If it ain't Gandhi, it's Jesus Christ."
~(Billy)~

" 'An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.'
I believe that wholeheartedly."
~(Hans)~

"No, it doesn't.
There'll be one guy left with one eye.
How's the last blind guy gonna take out the eye
of
the last guy left who's still got one eye?"

"All that guy has to do is run away and hide behind a bush."

"Gandhi was wrong.
It's just that nobody's got the balls to come right out and say it."

Seven Psychopaths - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Seven Psychopaths is a 2012 British black comedy film written, co-produced and directed by Martin McDonagh. It stars Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits, and Christopher Walken. The film marks the second collaboration between McDonagh and Farrell, following 2008's In Bruges.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praised the performances of the main cast members, he stated: "As creatively bankrupt Marty, Farrell is in subdued mode here, his performance largely defined by the endless expressivity of his eyebrows. He serves as an excellent foil for Rockwell, whose line readings continually dance between knowingness and idiocy, and Walken, who ventures as far into deadpan as you can go while remaining conscious. And Harrelson has fun contrasting his devotion to Bonny with his contempt for humanity." He wrote about the film that "while it's way behind the Pulp Fiction curve, Seven Psychopaths can be terrifically entertaining."

Loved, how in the end, Bonny the Shih Tzu showed lack of loyalty by extending her paw to Billy the dog kidnapper instead of running back to her owner when called; Bonny's passiveness throughout the whole movie.

Once had a friend who was having trouble deciding when to put his pet down.
Woodrow, his Maine Coon cat/surrogate child, was suffering from untreatable oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Having just received an email in which my friend claimed he was all set to take Woodrow in to be euthanized one day...
but changed his mind as Woodrow was having a good day.

I wrote back:
Try hard not to read too much into a good day;
they don't see them the same way we do.
For they know not tomorrow
nor
why we (their owners) are even here today.

knew it would be something his friend was not going to appreciate hearing.

Find it interesting,
that the only two photos I have taken of me at work....
I'm holding a Shih Tzu?

Puppies Over Pills: Pfizer Spinoff Zoetis Shines In Biggest IPO Since Facebook

Wall Street gave a warm greeting to Pfizer‘s animal health business Friday, as Zoetis got a big lift in its first day of trading.

Pfizer’s Chairman and CEO Ian Read said the Zoetis IPO creates the “largest standalone company fully devoted to animal health medicines and vaccines,” and leaves the pharmaceutical giant “better positioned to focus on our core business,” by unlocking the value in Zoetis and returning it to the parent’s shareholders. Pfizer was up 1.1% at $27.59 Friday morning.

Jehovah's Witnesses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What do you get when you cross

Jehovah's Witnesses?

Amber & Allison
Children who ring your doorbell

Jehovah's Witnesses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Jehovah's Witnesses emphasize use of God's biblical name, represented in the original texts by the Tetragrammaton, and in English they prefer to use the name, Jehovah. They believe that Jehovah is the only true God, the creator of all things, and the "Universal Sovereign". They believe that all worship should be directed toward him, and that he is not part of a Trinity;  consequently, the religion places more emphasis on God than on Christ. They believe that the holy spirit is God's power or "active force" rather than a person.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus is God's only direct creation, that everything else was created by means of Christ, and that the initial unassisted act of creation uniquely identifies Jesus as God's "only-begotten Son".  Jesus served as a redeemer and a ransom sacrifice to pay for the sins of mankind.  They believe Jesus died on a single upright torture stake rather than the traditional cross.  They believe that references in the Bible to the Archangel Michael, Abaddon (Apollyon), and the Word all refer to Jesus.  Jesus is considered to be the only intercessor and high priest between God and mankind, and appointed by God as the king and judge of his kingdom.  His role as a mediator (referred to in 1 Timothy 2:5) is applied to the 'anointed' class, though the 'other sheep' are said to also benefit from the arrangement.

I asked Amber and Allison how they would answer the question:
Did God have Mary's permission having that child?

Amber answered:
"Yes.  God blessed Mary with his child; agreed to be God's slave/servant."

Then we disagreed over the definition of "slave" and "servant."
That topic ending with no answer when I then asked:
"Do you believe women should be subservient to their husbands?"

Allison asked if she could come back Thursday for us to discuss this more?

I said, "sure."
Honestly don't think she's going to show?

Leaves of Grass (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Leaves of Grass is an American black comedy/drama film written and directed by, and featuring, Tim Blake Nelson. It also stars Edward Norton, Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon, Melanie Lynskey and Keri Russell.

Critical reception

"Leaves of Grass has the structure and the elements of a classical Greek drama: There's treachery, mistaken identity, deadly plots, and ambition; that it takes place in the middle of Oklahoma is almost irrelevant", said Paul Constant.  Leaves of Grass received mixed-to-positive reviews from film critics, with unanimous praise given to Norton's dual performance. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 63% of 35 critics gave the film a positive review, with an average score of 5.6/10, and the critical consensus being that "Edward Norton delivers one of his finest performances in Leaves of Grass, but he's overpowered by the movie's many jarring tonal shifts."

Leaves of Grass is a poetry collection by the American poet Walt Whitman (1819–1892). Though the first edition was published in 1855, Whitman spent his entire life writing Leaves of Grass, revising it in several editions until his death.

This book is notable for its discussion of delight in sensual pleasures during a time when such candid displays were considered immoral. Where much previous poetry, especially English, relied on symbolismallegory, and meditation on the religious and spiritualLeaves of Grass (particularly the first edition) exalted the body and the material world. Influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalist movement, itself an offshoot of Romanticism, Whitman's poetry praises nature and the individual human's role in it. However, much like Emerson, Whitman does not diminish the role of the mind or the spirit; rather, he elevates the human form and the human mind, deeming both worthy of poetic praise.

The title Leaves of Grass was a pun. "Grass" was a term given by publishers to works of minor value and "leaves" is another name for the pages on which they were printed.

American Atheists Legal Philosophy | American Atheists

American Atheists Legal Philosophy | American Atheists: There are methods of appeal from the ruling of judges to higher courts. Each state has its own appellant system; the courts of the United States have another, both ending at the United States Supreme Court. One does not, despite their bravado, “take the case all the way to the Supreme Court.” No one “takes” a case to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). One petitions SCOTUS to hear a case, and the odds are several thousand to one against a given case being granted review. If the high court does take a care, and makes a ruling, whether the case comes up through the federal or state system, the holdings of the court make legal rulings that become “precedents” that are binding in every court of the United States. A ruling of SCOTUS may not be correct, but it is final.

The scope of a given court ruling depends on the “jurisdiction” of the court, or the area over which that court has power. A city court ruling might only affect the city in which it is made, and a state court holding, or a federal opinion, affects only the area served by that court. The appeal courts have a wider net. The Supreme Court of a state can make precedents that bind all courts of that state. A federal court usually covers a specific geographical portion of a state. A United States Court of Appeal covers several states. If, by way of example, a bad decision is made in a federal court in Louisville, Kentucky, it only has binding application in about half of the state of Kentucky. If that horribly bad holding is appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers all of the states of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee, and that bad ruling should be affirmed, the party taking the appeal has thereby managed to expand a horror story from their own back yard into bad law for four states. If SCOTUS should take the case, and affirm the bad ruling, then a major legal disaster has occurred that affects the way the law will be decided in the future throughout the entire United States and in every court therein. If one has any concern for the future of our freedoms, one should proceed with caution. This is not a suitable sport for amateurs.

Bad facts make bad law. It should be considered an act of legal negligence for one to take a case to a higher court where it is completely predestined that the court will rule against a meritorious cause, and thereby make bad law not only in that case, in that region of the country, but, depending on which appellate court is chosen, make bad law for a much wider area, where the bad ruling will be the law until the case in question is ultimately, if ever, overruled. By building on bad precedents, in time the very concept of separation of religion and government could be destroyed. The religious right understands this. We would be well advised to understand it as well.

Barrel of Monkeys:  Genesis in Reverse

Right or wrong, spoken or unspoken, opinions are not just collections of idle thoughts.
They have consequences.
They are windows to one's soul.

By conventional standards, I am not a success story. To my peers, nothing to brag about, career or relationship wise. I am, however, financially secure enough to live a comfortable "quiet" lifestyle.

But,
to be quiet would require pretending,
I didn't see it, I didn't hear it, I didn't have something I needed to say;
where injustice doesn't concern me,
I don't get involved.

Manatee Nebula: Celestial Wonder Looks Uncannily Like a Sea Creature | Space.com

Manatee Nebula: Celestial Wonder Looks Uncannily Like a Sea Creature | Space.com: A watery-looking nebula in deep space is being renamed after the sea creature it strongly resembles: a manatee.

The nebula is the leftovers from a star that died in a supernova explosion about 20,000 years ago. Before it died, the giant star puffed out its outer gaseous layers, which now swirl in green-and-blue clouds around the dead hulk of the star, which has collapsed into a black hole.

The new photo shows the manatee nebula seemingly mimicking a trademark pose of the animal, which is often seen floating on its back, with flippers crossed over belly.

Obama’s Campaign Organization Turns to Gun Control - ABC News

Obama’s Campaign Organization Turns to Gun Control - ABC News: President Obama said Wednesday that his plan to curb gun violence would not come to fruition “unless the American people demand it.” And today, he began mobilizing his still-active presidential campaign apparatus to do just that.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina is leading the charge, tapping the president’s coveted 4 million-strong email list to share details of the White House gun plan and launch a new online petition calling for action on gun reform: “Say you stand with President Obama in tackling this critical issue,” Messina wrote.

Later, tweeting for the first time since Election Day, Messina wrote: “Whoa. Early response to gun violence petition this morning very strong. Thousands of signers already.”

Vox populi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The voice of the people
[is]
the voice of God?"

Vox populi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Often quoted as, Vox populi, vox Dei, "The voice of the people [is] the voice of God", is an old proverb often erroneously attributed to William of Malmesbury in the twelfth century.

Another early reference to the expression is in a letter from Alcuin to Charlemagne in 798, although it is believed to have been in earlier use. The full quotation from Alcuin reads:

Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.

English translation:

And those people should not be listened to who keep saying the voice of the people is the voice of God, since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness.

The usage indicates that the phrase had long since become an aphorism of common political wisdom by Alcuin and Charlemagne's time.

'the
voice of God is over the waters,
the
God of Glory thunders'

There is a theme in today's readings and that theme is awe, awe at God's overwhelming greatness. First, in Psalm 29 'the voice of God is over the waters, the God of Glory thunders.' God's voice shatters the greatest of the trees and makes the wilderness shake.

In the reading from Exodus, God prepared Moses and the people of Israel for the giving of the law on Mount Sinai. The people needed to be pure to receive God's words and the mountain was so holy that no creature might touch it. Thunder and lightning, thick cloud and smoke were all around when the people met at the foot of the mountain. God's presence was like the loud blast of a trumpet, like an earthquake, like a violent storm. In the next chapter we will hear that they asked Moses to speak to God for them – they were afraid that if God spoke directly to them they would die.

We are shown in these readings that God's power is overwhelming, like a terrifying natural phenomenon; we human beings cannot look at God, cannot survive in God's presence – we need a go-between like Moses or the angel Gabriel. Our response, our right response, is awe and fear.

Seen most often in the gay community, slang for Party n' Play. Party refers to drug use- most often meth (tina, ice, crank) but sometimes ecstasy (E, XTC, Adam) cocaine (coke, blow, ski, snow), or poppers as well(though the latter is not generally considered a PnP item. Play refers to sex. PnP is considered a scene in itself- sex and drugs.

Historical Jesus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: John P. Meier's portrait of Jesus as the Marginal Jew is built on the view that Jesus knowingly marginalized himself in a number of ways, first by abandoning his profession as a carpenter and becoming a preacher with no means of support, then arguing against the teachings and traditions of the time while he had no formal rabbinic training.

The film currently has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 194 reviews, with an average score of 6.4/10, and the site's consensus saying: "Ted's 'romance versus bromance' plot is familiar, but the film's held aloft by the high-concept central premise and a very funny (albeit inconsistent) script."  Based on the "Top Critics", the film holds a 67% "Fresh" rating based on 12 reviews, with an average score of 6.9/10. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 62, based on 37 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".  Roger Ebert gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four, citing the film as "the best comedy screenplay so far [this year]," also praising the film on the fact that it "doesn't run out of steam."
